About
The so-called Freedom Corner on the Newtownards Road and Templemore Avenue in east Belfast comprises of four murals and are some of the most instantly recognisable in East Belfast.
They have been on the gable walls for over 35 years, depicting UDA symbols, gunmen, loyalist slogans and the crest of the Ulster Young Militants.
The Ulster Young Militants are considered to be the youth wing of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA), an Ulster loyalist paramilitary group in Northern Ireland. Commonly known as the Young Militants or UYM, the group formed in 1974 when the Troubles were at their height. Their motto is “terrae filius”, Latin for “son of the land”. Their numbers are unknown, but are mainly concentrated in the Belfast area, particularly east and south Belfast.
The iconic giant Samson and Goliath cranes at the Harland and Wolff shipyard form a dramatic backdrop to the murals.
